I have a polish rooster named Billy. He's about nine months old and anyway I just have a couple questions:

1. Sometimes he crows at midnight (tonight for example). Or he just crows a lot super late past dark. Is this normal/why does he do this?

2. When I pet him, he always fluffs up super abrupt like. Does this mean he's annoyed with me? He still lets me pet him. He hasn't attacked me, but he has bit me a couple times (not hard though. maybe it was more of an aggressive peck)

3. he circles me, my mom, and sisters, but not my dad. He never attacks us, but he attacks my dad all the time. Why does he treat us differently? Does he like sense that my dad is a male or something and is therefore all competitive or something? Haha

4. He always fluffs up. And he ALWAYS is crowing. What makes roosters crow?

Thank you for any insights etc.!!!

These pics of him are from like november. His afro has grown a little since then

I don't know why he crows at odd hours but, he sounds like a very aggressive rooster in the making. He circles you and your mom because in his eyes you are his hens. Your father is another rooster to him and he will be attacking him. He will go after his human hens when he feels you are disobeying him.

This is not a good situation. There are too many good, well behaved roosters looking for a home to keep one that is like a stick of dynamite just waiting for the fuse to be lit. Roosters can become very dangerous - because they can fly up and spur people in the face. I know there are some that believe aggressive roosters can be re-habbed. I am NOT one of them.

He has lost his fear and respect of humans and all heck will break lose. Honestly, he needs to be either rehomed or sent to freezer camp. People say aggressive roosters taste the best.

Welcome to BYC!

Roosters can crow at all hours of the day or night. Bright street lights and even the moon can get them crowing. But I agree with Drumstick Diva, he sounds like he is an aggressive rooster. They can be very protective of their flock sometimes and can be dangerous, especially around children. So I would keep an eye on him. If he turns really aggressive, you may need to re home him or send him to the stew pot. There are threads here on BYC on training a rooster to behave, however these techniques don't always work...

He sure is pretty!! Good luck with your roo and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good advice and links above. X3, roosters crow at all hours, at night they will crow if anything disturbs them or wakes them up. He is an aggressive rooster and most probably will just get worse, it sounds like he considers your dad his main competition right now for flock leader which is why he is attacking your dad pretty consistently. If you keep him and ever have young children around be very sure to keep him locked up, aggressive rooster can be very dangerous to toddlers.

Yep only in the movies do roosters crow only in the morning and yes it is very normal to have Roosters crow 24/7

If you watch Roosters they flap their wings really hard at times to build up air in their air bag and it holds enough air for a lot of crowing and if you have a lot of roosters you will have a compaction on the crowing just like dogs barking

Your Rooster Knows who is in charge and for some reason my Molted Houdan acts the same way

They are just naturally aggressive from what I have read from
people just like you and all with the same description of acts

I try to keep mine locked up as he just likes everyone to know he is large and in charge of the yard and with over 50 different animals in the yard he just needed a coop and run of his own

Good luck with your rooster as he is a good looking one
