Rooster Rescue

Oh, my goodness! I hope he's the sweet temperament type. If he's not, he may be back out there hanging with the dogs again. (Not really. I'll find a solution.)

You did a good deed and I hope he knows you want to help. Just let him come to you for treats, don't try to grab at him or startle him and develop a relationship slowly. You'll know soon which type he is.

Easter egger rooster, and depending on your area he was likely dumped due to his gender. It's great you've tried to find his owner, but I wouldn't hold my breath for someone to claim him.

Sadly, it happens that people just dump unwanted roosters. They do it to dogs and cat, why not an animal they'd just as soon eat? Horrible, yes, but reality.

Just for the fun of having colored eggs, I got several EE's a few years ago and Easter Egger math kicked in. I keep adding to my EE pool and so far have never had a mean one, if that's any help. Some of them have quirky personalities, but in a cute and funny kind of may.

Welcome. I see that you have just joined BYC. Hope that you enjoy BYC and and questions I know that soneone here can help. Thank you for rescuing the big boy. He may turn into the best friend you have ever had. :)

Hi again,

Thanks for both the welcome and all of your posts. Although I just joined, I've been to the Backyard Chickens Forum lots of times in the past and have learned lots even though I grew up with chickens. I learned about the Pullet Shut automatic door opener on the forum and installed one. That door has SO cut down my worries. It also cut down my prayer life because I was spending so much time praying that those chickens would stay safe until I got home from work on my late nights!

My first rooster after moving into this country sub-division was also a dog rescue. I was down the street at my sister's house and heard our young teens out in the yard screaming and dogs barking. My sister and I ran outside to see one of the dogs with a chicken in his mouth. I managed to extricate the little fellow, but I didn't think he could possible live from probably internal injuries. He did live. And I'll swear to this day he understood I'd saved his life. He'd follow me like a puppy, even into the house. Although our community rules state no farm animals, we have a no-leash law. (Quite a few of us now break that rule and keep backyard chickens.) Even though my builder lived next door, I kept the little Old English game rooster and found him a couple of wives. For the rest of his life though, I remained his #1 lady and the love was mutual.

It's a horrible thought to think of people just dumping any animal, helpless chickens especially. I have one house that I will return to tomorrow and leave a note. One neighbor said the man there has had chickens, and I found part of "Lucky's" tail feathers at his front door. Based on the length of the tail feathers I found, I'd pretty well ruled out Cubalyas.
