We were at a wedding today, so I didn't get to check on my chickens until 5 this evening. When I went to my chicken house, the door was wide open. I checked that everyone was there, but my Buff Orpington rooster was missing. I got a bucket of grain and went looking for him, but all I found was a trail of feathers and dog tracks. I went back and watered the others, thinking he was long gone. I decided i'd try and find his body or what was left of it, so that maybe I could find out who did it, and went a little further than the feather trail. I went around the corner and there I saw my rooster, a little worse for wear, but very much alive. The dogs must have chased him and pulled his tail feathers out, but other than that he is ok. I'm so glad I looked for him a second time, or he'd have been coyote bait tonight. Now I just want to figure out how the door got open, since I know I closed it well last night. My only guess is one of the ranch kids wanted to see the birds, and didn't close the door on the way out.

How Scary! I'm glad that he was ok! We had something similar happen when my kids didn't get the latch shut and our own dog got out...My Araucana I thought was history with all the feathers I found. She was hiding, with no injuries behind an old door. She still has a big hole in her tail feathers, but she is fine otherwise, like your Rooster...

I hope you can figure out what happened. Maybe its time for a stronger lock?

It has one of those sliding bolts, on an old front door, and I always make sure I swivel it down in the little notch so that a dog can't nudge it open. I think I will put a hasp lock high up too so that little people can't open it.

I have locks on all of our coop doors, they sure keep me from worrying when we are gone from home for any lenth of time!

Glad you found your roo!
