Rooster sitting on eggs????

I'm a newbie chicken owner, a little less than a year. I have 2 roosters, one New Hampshire Red and one Dominique. I also have 4 Dominique hens. My question is, Do roosters sit on eggs? Our younger rooster (8 months old), sits on the eggs after our hens have laid them. He ususally sits on them for about a half hour then leaves the coop to free range. I collect the eggs after that, so I don't know if he would want to go back and sit on them. Just curious

He is trying to get the girls to go in there and sit on the eggs. He is letting them know it is a nice nest ready for them.

Some roos will sit on eggs for a few minutes once a broody hen gets up to stretch, eat and drink. He is trying to be a good roo.

I have the same thing happening! For those who remember, we hatched 15 chickens April 1st and ended up with 9 roos! Found REALLY good homes for 7 of our boys and kept two (have now added more hens.....18 to two roos). Lola and Carol (I know.....poor boys being stuck with girl's names!) seem to favor the same hen, however, Lola seems to win the hen over and she follows him around all over the yard etc. She has just laid her third egg...... first one by the ramp in the run, 2nd in a corner in the coop and third, right in the middle of the coop?? The second one in the corner is the one that the roo was sitting on. The hen was in their with him, standing beside him. I have 6 nest boxes in there and I can see that someone has been in all of them so why is she laying in these strange places?
I also have 6 Silkies and one (Big Mama or Tina Turner) has just laid her first two eggs over the last two days. My kids had them fried for breakfast and said they tasted better than the hen eggs!
Does anyone else have Silkies? If so, do you let them free range with the other hens? I would love to let mine free range but we're pretty rural and I'm terrified of something getting them. My other chickens have been free ranging for the last 3 weeks and we haven't had any problems as yet.

We have a barred rock that sits on the nest the same way. I thought it was really strange but I just searched and found out a couple of people have posted about theirs doing it too, so that's a relief. My hen has laid elsewhere 4 days in a row now and he's been chasing her in the coop and sitting in the boxes all night. This morning he was sitting on top of her in the box! So maybe he's going to force her to start laying in the boxes. We'll see if it works.

I have 5 hens and my rooster has now started following my top of the pecking order hen when she lays and then when she leaves he sits on it. The hen doesn't seem broody though! He also guards her like everytime she is trying to lay her egg. I've not seen him do this with other hens.

Where do you think the term "hen pecked" came from???
