Would a 1 year old rooster have spurs that are 1/2"- to 3/4" long. I passed a sign at a local small farmers market that said free live roosters. I stopped to look and they where beautiful birds. By the looks of their feet and the size of the spurs they looked older to me. The lady had 2 hens and 11 roosters and had no idea what kind they where. I passed on the offer. I just can't imagine they didn't fight all the time. John

1/2-3/4 inch spurs are nubs not really spurs:D yes sounds like less than a one year old bird to me! but ive only owned 3 roos

The roo i have now is alittle over a year and his spurs are around 2" long and SHARP like razors!!, not like my other rooster who was 7 months old (RIP roo)

his spurs were about 5/8 and rounded.

Breed has a lot to do with this, and this can be fudged too by twisting the spur off to make it look like a stag again. Some breeds get large spurs after a year or so, and others it can take 2 or more years to get long spurs. Typically, straight combed fowl get spurs quicker than pea combed fowl.

Straight combed fowl typically mature faster than pea combed fowl.

My roo is just over a year and has 3/4 inch rounded spurs--thank goodness, b/c he recently started challenging everyone. He is a mixed breed with a single comb.

My 11 month old roo has spurs about 3/4th in long. They are rounded, he is straight combed. He's a Marans.

Our 14 month roo had nasty 1/2" spurs...started to bloodey up the hens....

he now has rounded nubbies again.....
