Rooster suddenly very ill!

That's very curious. How old was he?
Was he fed the same as the hens his whole life?
Chickens have 2 kidneys with 3 segments each. Some respiratory diseases as well as excessive calcium in the diet can damage those segments. They can become atrophied or enlarged. I would think the state vet, if a trained avian/poultry pathologist, would know that.

He was under a year old, and we fed him flock raiser crumbles, so he should not have gotten excess calcium. The state vet wasn’t the one who did the necropsy, it was some poultry specialist at Cornell that did, apparently she’s one of the best.

They believe this was some sort of developmental issue, since it was negative for mareks.

I asked the vet to do it, he even told me that he didnt do them at his clinic but could submit them to a nearby lab. But didnt do a dang thing to work through any differentials. I feel like he was kinda waiting for Ocho to die.
Call your state lab and find out how to submit samples yourself if the vet is not being cooperative:)

He is resting, but his head is twisting involuntarily. Have given Nutri drench and a little bit of water, still no poop to photograph. Any ideas? Also would welcome ideas on how to get water into him without aspirating?
@coach723, @staceyj

Electrolytes make them thirsty and will search for water. I wonder about worms. Combs will become white from anemia created by worms.
An insect could have bit him. We have scorpions. They don’t kill but give a lot of neurological and feather bleaching and messes up molting.

Wow! Scorpions are pretty scary critters, but I haven't seen any here. I think it's too humid. His comb has been more on the dark red/purplish side of things.

Lol I live in Florida.. people think we sweat. Nope lol thats humidity hanging off my nose lol oh and many roos have temperamental combs. Purple means I am upset! My Barbezieux do it a lot. First time I saw it I thought blood was being cut off lol

Here's a little update on Ocho the rooster: had his last cefazolin injection this morning and continues to get PND and electrolytes dropped into his beak. Eating pretty good. We put him in the yard this morning and brought up his favorite hen for company. Not a good idea, he chased her around and mated her a couple of times then sort of crashed and burned! Brought him in to his clean carrier and did his meds. He ate and started crowing again. Later I let him out again alone and made a video so y'all can see how he looks.
