Sorry if this has been covered before, but I am new here and I have been unable to find a similar thread.
I have a mixed flock consisting of 1 Buff Orpington rooster, 3 Buff Orpington hens, 1 normal "run of the mill" hen and 2 bantam-cross hens.
All 4 Orpies are from the same brood and about 10 months old.
The trouble is that the rooster will quite happily cover the smaller hens, so much so that they are getting bald spots on their backs and necks, but he seems incapable of covering the Orpie hens.
The Orpie hens have developed quite normally and are fairly steady layers, in fact, two of them have just come off a "broody" cycle, so the problem would not seem to lie with them.
The rooster and the 3 Orpie hens are now in a separate compound away from the smaller hens but he still is not getting the right idea!
Any clues as to how I can proceed?
Or is he simply destined for the soup pot?
Thanks
