Rooster Thread

Rescuing roosters would be wonderful! I would want to do that, if I had the time and space. Especially roosters who come from abusive situations. I got one of my roosters from a home that treated him and the others not very well. He is happier living here, and he definitely looks a LOT better. Feathers changed completely from looking ragged to full and healthy.
Aww I’m glad to hear that. Which rooster is your rescued one?

Phoenix! He is a Cochin/Ameraucana hybrid. Which means he is an Easter Egger.

He is pretty old, his owner said he is two years old but I doubt it from how he feels when holding and how he acts. And he is half-blind, maybe from old age? Not sure. He is really sweet and nothing really phases him, not even Slate the Cochin Bantam rooster coming through a hole in the fence and getting into Phoenix's yard, dancing at his hens. :gig

Oh he is just precious! He looks like such a sweetheart. Between him and Slate, those ladies have the cream of the crop!

Thank you! Here is Phoenix laying down. I have noticed 2:00 is the time of resting for my chickens, and Phoenix sleeps a lot when his hens are not up foraging. I went out at around that time and checked on the chickens. Phoenix was up, but laid down when some of his hens went in the pen to rest. I crouched down beside him and he let me get really close to him. When he wants to rest, Phoenix quietly clucks at his laying spot until a hen comes over to join him. Or me, he is even comfortable with me.

When I went out today, Slate was hidden inside of a bush, clucking like crazy. He was trying to tell the hens he found a good laying spot, and Tomato listened to him afterwards and laid her egg in there. Slate guarded her outside of the bush. Tomato is one of Phoenix's hens, but it seems like these chickens integrate themselves in the wrong yard every day, LOL.

I got some good pictures of Slate while he was guarding Tomato in the bush.

And of course, I will not hesitate to take a picture of a fluffy Cochin butt.

This was Phoenix when were first getting him. See the difference care can do to a chicken's appearance? He looks so much better compared to in this picture.

He looks so much better in the first picture you shared of him! His comb is much more vivid and his feathers way shinier. I can tell he is much happier in your care!

That fluffy butt 😍 rooster antics can be soo adorable and endearing. I love hearing about them. And these boys both truly sound like gentlemen. How nice that they can coexist for the most part it sounds like. Mr. Phoenix deserves that afternoon nap every day, he has had to put up with quiet a rough life before coming to you 😊

Definitely! Phoenix has a lot of hens to take care of since coming here and he deserves his naps! I sometimes believe he is glad that Slate is here to take care of them when Phoenix himself is not available, LOL.
