I have a light Brahma Rooster(well he is 8 months old ). He is huge compared to my hens. The girls look really bad right now from him breeding them. He killed (I think he did it) one of our 2 month old chicks this morning, (I just don't think he likes them. lol)

My question is: Is there a breed that has a bigger chance of producing a nice normal size rooster? He is the calmest rooster ever, and so pretty I hate to get rid of him but I am going to have to rehome due to the health of the girls. Just looking for another breed that has less of a chance of being aggressive.

Chicks should not be kept with roosters, I learned that the hard way. :(

I found Orphingtons have been really sweet with my girls, but as always there can be bad ones. I've had more sweet, calm, gentle orphinton roosters than any other breed. I've had 1 mean Orphington in 8 years of owning chickens.
What breed are your hens?

What kind of hens do you have? If the birds had ample room it is likely the rooster did not kill the month old chick. How many hens do you have? I have often had big roosters with smaller hens; it only became a problem when there were too few hens or more than one rooster. Could the hens be molting? Over breeding usually results in the hens having bare and damaged backs/heads where the rest of the body feathers are in good condition.

i also wonder if this is more a problem of the space available to your chickens, and not so much about the roosters size.
Yes, some roosters can be to rough with the ladies but you say he is a calm bird.
some roosters can have a favorite hen and she can become kind of rough in appearance because of it.
i have a standard size rooster "Ringo" who has a favorite hen . she is a Jap Bantam and she is with him most of the time. she shows no feather loss. and yes her eggs are fertile. she hatch some of her own eggs this summer. i only have this one rooster, but i free range so there is lots of room.
you say all your hens have bare areas, is it possible you have a feather picker?

Room isn't a problem They free range most of the time. There are 7 hens the rooster and was 4 babies (which two of the three will be leaving if my guess is right and they are cockrels) I have a rir, plymoth rocks, a light brahama, and a few others I am not sure the breed on. He is like 3 times their size or even bigger than that.

as for molting that could be but I didn't think they molted this late in the year. althought it has been warm the past week it is in the 30-40 here.

Molting can occur outside the "normal" span, are they still laying? Where are you missing feathers or seeing wounds?

Mostly on the body/back and sides.. one more than the others.. they are about a year and a half old.. the one is missing all over... I looked after the one was roasted not a wound like I thought she is missing alot around her vent...

Eggs: depending on the day.. eggs have slowed (first time for this) but it appears non has completely stopped... but could have..

The smaller of my hens seem to run away from him... of course he chases but eventually gives up... I watched one run around and under a lounge chair the other day. To funny she realized he couldn't get under it so she stayed under it. It gave me a good chuckle....
