Our first year with chickens included a rooster who was one of those miserable attack birds, and we put up with him for way too long.
It's much easier to raise cockerel in a flock with adult hens, and more experience, and better expectations. Then if things go badly, it's also easier to 'say goodby, good riddance' to a jerk.
