I consider my roo to be one of the most valuable member of my flock, if not the most. He has a job - protecting and caring for the hens - and he does it well.
I have a hen that's pretty much been shunned by the flock, because of her problems not theirs. She manages to live on the edges of the flock without too much trouble and I take extra care of her. If it came to the point where she was being hurt by the roo or the other hens, I'd deal with her, not the other chickens that are just doing what nature tells them to do.
