Rooster tried to KILL 2 of my hens!!

That made so much sense I felt it needed to be repeated so I'm doing it.
I don't know why roosters seem to be getting so much bad press lately.

I consider my roo to be one of the most valuable member of my flock, if not the most. He has a job - protecting and caring for the hens - and he does it well.
I have a hen that's pretty much been shunned by the flock, because of her problems not theirs. She manages to live on the edges of the flock without too much trouble and I take extra care of her. If it came to the point where she was being hurt by the roo or the other hens, I'd deal with her, not the other chickens that are just doing what nature tells them to do.

I just find it hard to believe that a rooster that was so non-aggressive and good to his hens would "starve" two perfectly healthy hens. I suspect that there is something wrong with them and he is reacting to their poor health (a flock threat). Please give the guy a chance and rehabilitate the hens separately.

i would take them out,, then "work" on them,, get them feeling better, and would watch for illness warning signs,, and in a few months, you can try to re-introduce them,, usually even a week later, their totally " different" to the flock, just like they've never met before,,, BUT,, that also means, your gonna have to watch them get "picked" on, feathers pulled, and chases, from all the other hens . they ALL will need to show where they are on that big ladder

EDIT: ta add ,,, HE WASNT TRYING TO KILL THEM !!! geesh,,,, people think bout it,, he had 1 in a corner already, coward down,, he LEFT her,, no blood,, no hanging wings,, and then went to the other,, STILL NOT causing REAL harm,,,,,, a scratched up comb is something EVERY hen and roo gets ALL the time. do you REALLY think that , if that roo wanted them dead,,, he couldnt have done it????????????????? it would take a roo about 3 minutes to kill a hen,,especially a SMALL HEN.,,, but he didnt,, he actually WALKED AWAY from 1

I like roos, too.

I have 9 mature roos and at least three 1.5 month old cockerals growing out.

They have a job to do and do it very well if we stay out their way and let nature handle the business of nature.

I like all of my hens and my roo, but I am THE alpha roo and provider, so i have to say, that if I saw a real streak of meanness or brutality to the hens from my roo, I would separate HIM from the flock after a good going over by me.

/Opens can of worms..

In my opinion, there is no animal that is capable of being "mean". Animals are brutal, but that is the world that we live in. All animals have instincts to keep themselves healthy and able to procreate. I don't know why it is insisted that he was being "mean" or "agressive". He was being a rooster. If you don't want to produce more chickens, then I wouldn't worry about keeping a rooster..

But, like has already been posted, if he wanted them dead at that moment, they would be dead.....

In my opinion a rooster is worth more in my flock that any number of hens... as long as I have a few hens he does like!

That way I can produce more chickens, that produce more chickens, and so on and so forth.

If one of the hens was nearly starved to death, you had better check on the body weight of ALL of your hens. And, unfortunately, the rooster did only think he was doing his job. But, if he was mine, he would probably be on the dinner table as soon as possible.
