rooster trying to play lay an egg?

There has been more than one occasion when I go into the coop to collect eggs and my rooster will follow me in there, crouch in the corner of the wall and door, and will kick the shaving around like a hen does when she is on the nest or outside in the dirt but way low (almost laying down). He never bugs me as I get them but he does this. Do you know what this means and why he is doing it? Thanks.

Mine do that a lot. I just figure he's getting the nest ready for the ladies, lol.

And he is not in the nest box? That is strange. My first roo had never done that. It's pretty cute!

I caught my frizzle roo sitting on one of my EE hen's eggs. I tried to move him so I could get it and he wouldn't let me! But my other roos will scratch around and circle around like that in the nesting boxes and on the floor in the corner of the coop, all while making the silliest sounds like he's saying "Here, look what I did for you" lol.

That is the funniest thing. I think it is so cute. I wish I would see him in the nest box on an egg like that.

My rooster Penrod is segregated from the hens, but he does share common chicken wire barriers so he can communicate with them. This doesn't stop him from hanging out in the coop on his side, fluffing up the wood shavings, cooing to entice a hen to come in and try out the nest boxes on the other side. Sometimes a hen will hear him in there, cooing to beat the band, and will go in to see what he's up to. But, often as not, he's in there all alone, trying to play house with no one to play with him.

I think he's just a domestic softie. And yes, it's cute as all get-out.
