Rooster Turned Mean: In my experience, and I have had many roosters, it is hopeless to try to change the behavior of a mean rooster. There are nice roosters out there, so I would rehome the mean one, or humanely end his life, and try again with another roo.

I have had my main flock rooster turn on me before. If you understand roosters, and have a good rooster, you can probably figure why they occasionally act aggressively.

Example: my Speckled Sussex rooster spurred me (random) one night when I had a whole big bowl of feed, it spilled everywhere & he spurred me good. Next night, same thing. I put him in a dog crate to "reset" his attitude. One week of reset time worked wonders. In the end I determined he spurred me because we had just set our clocks forward an hour (daylight savings time) therefore in his mind, I was putting them up a whole hour earlier than I should have.

I've also had a very beautiful Rhode Island Red cockerel. He was so mean and aggressive I absolutely knew he was not going to be able to acclimate to the flock.

I know it has been a few weeks since you made your post about your angry roo. Have you done anything with him yet?

I am sorry, I just read where you had given your roo to a neighbor.

Does anyone know if a Roo knows the difference between male and female keepers? I had a Roo that I had to get rid of because he was always attacking my husband. He did not attack me. He did get a little aggressive but not to the point of attacking or spurring. Now I have another who has been just a big pet and he has started feeling his oats. He has attacked my husband but has not attacked me. I just wonder if, when they get that urge for the ladies, does he realize that it is another male in his hemisphere and if that could be his reason for attacking my husband and not me?

It has more to do with who they see as dominant and in charge. You are the boss, and they know it. They don't respect your husband, so they go after him.

I was wondering if it is a territorial thing, a male thing, or something else.My husband don't feed them, I do so maybe that has something to do with it too. Do you think trust has anything to do with it?

More like, they know not to test you. But your husband isn't around them much, so they try to test him. Trying to figure out where he stands in the pecking order. Since they've successfully challenged and defeated him, they will continue to do so every chance they get. He's got to 'fight' back, if he wants them to leave him alone.

Good to know. He took a 2x4 to the last one. Obviously, he didn't hurt him or did he make a believer of the roo. I gave the roo away and I lost track of how many homes he went thru. But, he got the name of devil rooster. He rode one of my hens so often that he dug gashes into her all the way to the bone. I seperated them and it made him meaner. He was not interested in any of the other hens. She got an infection and died over his insatiable appetite for her. The roo I have now is a Barred rock and I just hope he don't get as mean as the last one. The last one was an Leghorn.
