Hello. everyone,
I have a rooster that I had gotten around a month ago. He has been extremely healthy and has gotten along with my other chickens up until now. My youngest rooster (who barely has spurs growing since he's super young and is just now maturing) pecked out my other rooster's eye. Here in the last couple of days we have noticed an infection starting (clear and white puss, swollen shut) and we have no idea what to do. We can't afford a vet visit since in my area the vets charge a lot of money for a simple visit. Should we isolate him? What antibiotics should we get (the cheapest ones possible seeing our financial situation)? Should we just put him down? Can he infect other chickens? Help please!!!!!

Can you post any pictures of the rooster’s eye? Are you certain that he was pecked in the eye, or could he have a respiratory infection? Do you see any nasal drainage, sneeze, or crackly breathing? I would get some saline eye wash, and clean the eye twice a day to remove any pus. Then apply a dab of Neosprin ointment into the eye twice a day. Roosters will fight, and it is hard to have more than one in a flock unless the other one has been there all along and is subordinate.

No respiratory symptoms, I checked about that earlier. When I head back out to my coop Ill send pictures. I'll Neosporin right now. And yes, I am certain. He has no eye in the socket, when we first got him he was healthy as can be. Thank you for your help!! I was freaking out because I don't want to lose my bets friend.

You can find saline eye wash in most drug stores and Bausch and Lomb for about $4 is good. Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment is also available there. Feed stores sell Terramycin eye ointment and Vetericyn eye gel as well.
