I went out to check on the chickens and my 28 week old Ameracauna Rooster appears to have 2 broken toes. Both his middles toes, one on each foot, are turned inward, and they appear to be broken at the knuckle. He is walking and acting normally, just kind of hopping every once in a while. What should I do? Splint these toes or what??
Also, his feet looked fine yesterday, I believe he may have gotten them caught in between slats on an old pallet while running or something.

Maybe you could just tape his toes together. A friend told me you could do this if they are born with crooked toes, so maybe it work. She told me that there was no need for splints, just tape them.

If they don't appear to be hurting him I wouldn't be so sure they are broken. Did any thing happen that might make you think they are broken? The reason I am questioning you is I have a 12 week old Silver Laced Polish roo that has the same 2 toes that bend completely to the sides. They don't hurt him and he can walk fine maybe a little off balance due to the toes being bent to the side. He was not hatched that way. rather we simply noticed it one morning when he was about 10 weeks old. But I was told it may bee a vitamin deficiency. Check out this link and see post #6 for a possible cure.

I have been giving mine 3 drops of Polyvisol Enfamil formulation (no extra iron ) this is a childrens liquid vitamin. I have not noticed any change for the better or the worse. Just wanted to pass the info on and let you decide what to do. good luck.

Carolina -- do they look like they're dislocated? Bent neatly right at the joint? You roo could be mine's brother :p I wish I knew what it was, but it doesn't seem to bother him, so I'm not worried. If any of his ladies raise babies, they're only for me, not to give away, so I'm not even terribly worried about him passing them on.

One of my BArred Rock roos has toes that are bent almost 90 degrees outward. walks fine, seems fine and they've always been like that, Wish I knew what to tell you. Good luck

they do look dislocated but he seems fine, he walks normally and even manages to fight with the other roosters just fine

it just looks painful to me...

THere are some nutritional issues that cause toes to curl to the side--I can't recall what is missing from the diet--I'll have to look it up, but vitamins should help.
