Help, my rooster has an eye problem. This would be 2 weeks since his eye has been closed. For the first week he had like white boogers coming from his eye, I would clean him almost daily when I noticed it coming out. He would open it a little bit but not much, now the skin inside his eye is covering his eyeball, I noticed one night he had clear liquid dripping out like he was crying & now he has like white boogers or pus inside the corner that I can not remove, I fear I might injure his eyeball trying to get it to maneuver out with a q tip. I’m not sure what’s going on? He’s the only one that has it, he has no other problems. He still eats good, drinks & is acting normal. The other chickens are all fine as well. Not sure what happened. Can anybody help figure out the next step to help him?

Welcome To BYC

He has an eye infection. You need to remove the pus so the eye can heal. Rinse with saline, press out the pus, then apply an a eye ointment like Terramycin into the eye. If you can't get Terramycin, then you can use Original Neosporin in the eye.

Do you notice a bad odor, does he have any other symptoms like coughing, sneezing, mucous from the nostrils, pus or mucous inside the beak?

Ok, I’ll try that this morning. It’s safe to push a little on his eye? I’m so scared I might hurt him. Lol Also, do I put the neosporin directly in the eye after? Or just the skin around? Yes it does kinda have an odor around his eye, not sure if it’s the eye or his feathers since he can’t clean that side of his body. No other problems, no coughing, no sneezing, no mucus. Any reason how he could’ve gotten this? Thanks so much.

You may need to press firmly to remove the pus.

Yes, put the Original Neosporin in the eye.

If the pus is not due to respiratory illness, he may have gotten something in the eye that has festered in there or it could be from injury/a peck or poke to the eye.

Pus will not dry up on it's own, so it needs to be removed. Having an odor is a bit concerning, so keep working on getting the pus cleared.

Thank you so much for your help, I’ll keep you posted on how he does later today.

Well, I managed to get some of it out. It’s still pretty well infected, I figured I’d give him some rest for the night & work on it tomorrow. It’s kind of like a hard cheese, I pushed firmly on the eye and the bottom lid but it’s hard, almost like stuck underneath. I used saline to flush the eye & q-tips to try and flick it out & I grasped a bit with my finger and pulled it out. I’m going to try a hot compress tomorrow & see if that will help loosen it up and push it out. I’m just so worried of hurting his little eye digging around in there. Plus he’s not the most sitting still little rooster.

Good job.
Keep working at it. The warm compress is a great idea.
If you need to control him a little better, swaddle him in a towel so you have his wings captured. Just not too tight to restrict his breathing.
Chicken pus is like a hard cheese, so getting it out is important, it won't dissolve or reabsorb so removing it is the only way to go.

Keep me posted!
