Last week I wormed all my flock, using a syringe to ensure they were all treated.

Unfortunately the next day I noticed my favourite rooster despondent, gasping for air and raspy, gurgly breathing, and his was off his food. I wasn't sure what it was - respiratory disease, worms, parasites, aspergillosis . . .

I immediately separated him and tried everything to save him - Electrolytes, worming, trying to feed him, he didn't eat for two days already. I gave him antibiotics alternating with electrolytes (via syringe) as he wouldn't eat or drink anything. I tried tempting him with all his favourite treats with no luck, he was going down hill.

So I was thinking - what would I do for person to deal with a similar illness? I decided to place him in front of a humidifier, and then alternating with an Infra Red Lamp.

The next morning I noticed he was a little more alert. I figured that I should stop using the humidifier, and just try to dry his lungs out with the IR lamp. I continued giving him antibiotics alternated with electrolytes and the lamp for 20 - 30min at a time, probably 5 to 8 times a day, mostly late afternoon and evenings in front of TV.

Well the next morning I was astonished to hear him crowing early in the morning as he was listless for a few days before that. I continued with the antibiotics for 3 days total as well as the IR lamp, and he was back to his perky and happy self within those 3 days. He started eating the third day.

We also get a lot of rain here so I figured it would be a good idea to try that in future when I see one of my babies sneezing of breathing heavily as well.

So this is basically what I feel healed him:

Antibiotics alternated with Electrolytes x 3 times a day
Placing him in a pet carrier and putting him in front of an IR Lamp for 20 - 30 min - about 50 to 60cm - 5 to 8 times a day, as per my availability

Of course in future I won't be worming them using a syringe, I have now changed their water setup where I can put any medication in their water bottle where they can drink at their leisure.

I hope this helps someone, I know I have lost other babies in the past due to running out of treatment options and not knowing where to turn. If I can help someone save their beautiful pets, I am happy.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
Most medications are not water soluble so it's difficult to get them into the bird that way.
When syringing, you need to place the syringe all the way back in the throat to safely get the meds down.
I personally squirt the dosage of liquid medication onto a piece of bread and the birds readily eat that with no fuss. I just have to remove the bird from the flock so the others cannot steal it. My coop is designed for this. The bird being dosed can see the others and doesn't panic.

Yeah I had tried that, but sometimes they move their head rather quickly, but I like your bread idea, will try that in future.

This is extremely helpful as my rooster is now suffering from a similar cold….if you don’t mind sharing -what type of antibiotics did you give him?

Sorry to hear about your rooster, hope he's doing better.

I used Sulprim powdered antibiotics, dissolved in water.

Hope that helps.

Hi. I just started Sulprim today. Is it right that I can never eat their eggs again? I have a rooster on it too and wonder if that too means, any girls he goes over ,even not on medication, would be withheld. Thanks

There should be a withdrawl period listed about the length of time to discard eggs. I've never heard of one being longer then 2 weeks.

Thanks, It says on the jar do not use in birds producing eggs for human consumption. The vet suggested never eat them again. But I'm doing searches and most say never heard of more than 14 days withdrawal with other antibiotics, but can't seem to find Sulprim alot in searches
