We introduced a rooster to our ladies about 4 months ago. There was a get to know each other period and all seemed to be getting along grand. He takes really good care of his ladies and they listen to him when he warns of danger or tells them it is time to eat or drink. Recently, he has decided that one of the hens cannot come out of the coop. I didn't know how much of a problem there was until I told my husband to put her outside with the rest of the flock. My roo pecked her a couple of times and she ran into the coop. He didn't go after her, but went about his usual business of taking care of the other ladies. There doesn't seem to be a problem at night between the two when it is time to close them up in the coop. We do have 11 hens. Any suggestions?

Roosters can have personality conflicts with hens. They can get convinced a certain hen has no place in the flock. This sort of rooster needs to be reprogrammed. Remove him from the flock for a while during the day. Let him do "patrol" outside of the coop and run, and after all the hens have roosted come evening, then you can let him into the coop for the night.

He may need to be kept separate for a few weeks until this hen reestablishes herself with the flock and gets rid of any notion in her brain that she's unworthy because of the way the rooster has been treating her. And it is certain to have had an effect on her. Hopefully it won't have affected the other hens' attitudes toward her.

While she's reacquainting with the flock, watch her to be sure something isn't wrong health-wise. The rooster may have picked up on a health issue that isn't very obvious. If the other hens give her a bad time, it could be something is going on with her health.
