I currently have 4 hens, which are around 12 weeks old. They are free dang and have a large coop. I am looking into getting a 6 or so week old rooster to protect them. Is this a good idea? I don’t think I’ll be getting more hens, and I don’t want the rooster to wear them out. Any suggestions?

He might choose a favourite. That will happen however many hens you get.
If he does become a problem, you could get saddles for your girls. It's hard to tell whether you'll have a problem until you actually get the rooster.
My cockerels don't do much protecting, but they're a joy to have. If you get a good one, it's great.

Not really....a 6wk old bird is months away from being 'protective'.
If you're new to chickens, best to not try a male or integration just yet.
The older birds will kick his butt.

I bought 10 hens from Farm and Family. 2 turned out to be roosters. :( I don't want a rooster. You can have them.
