Here is my 5 month old (hatched around March 20th) mystery chicken.
I say mystery because I (in my limited chicken parent experience) think it looks like a male. It’s super small though (taller yet more compact than the others, if that makes sense) It hasn’t started crowing yet whatsoever, and even has begun to submissively squat down when I pick it up. I’ve also never seen it in the nesting box to lay an egg or hear it song the egg laying song. All of its 19 siblings are female, so I’m wondering if being so outnumbered, and not having a older rooster around, hasn’t really been influenced or “shown” how to start crowing but rather has picked up on the submissive squat? I also have another barred rock who is clearly a female, and comparing them side by side, this guy had much earlier and more prolific comb development than the obvious female.
“He”’s just an overall very docile, sweet, calm bird but as “he” is supposedly reaching maturity, I’m just a bit confused on the gender.
For what it’s worth, I also would actually love for it to be a rooster. I live far from any neighbors and always thought the sound of a rooster crowing in the background is so charming. (I’m sure I’ll regret saying that someday…) So is it just wishful thinking on my part that it’s a rooster?
Thanks in advance for your input!
