Hello, I have a Barred Rock Rooster who is beating up one of my hens, she is an Americana. I only have 3 hens, one is a barred rock the other a Black Ausralop.I purchased the Roo beacause someone killed my Buff Orphinton. I figured a REoo the alert me.

I noticed the Roo just starting this yesterday. The hen has a bald spot were he is pecking. On her back. Any suggestions would help. Thank You, Greg

The birds are free range on 1/2 acre fenced yard.

Is the bald spot from actual pecking, or from him mounting her?

If it is from him mounting her, there are cute aprons you can buy or make that cover the back.

If it is from actual pecking (I know you said it was from pecking....but the location made me wonder if maybe most of the feather loss was from mounting), as long as there is no blood, I would let it go for a week. Often there is more aggression when the chickens are just getting to know each other, and then things settle down.

Thanks for the info. I thinks its from pecking, I've seen blood on his beak. I guesss I'll have rooster stew ! The Buff Orphington was a friendly bird. If I get more hens I'll get some that arnt so friendly.

Thanks again for the info. I'll still keep watch for a couple of days.

You may want to get more hens. It will be hard on all the girls if he uses them so frequently. Just another thought.
