rooster

Depends....do you want him for breeding? If not, then it is just personal choice. I didn't get my first roo for breeding but just because he was stunningly beautiful and FREE and would otherwise have ended up in a pie!

There is no NEED for a roo unless you want to breed. The girls will lay no differently and will keep their own order without a man around but if you just fancy having a beautiful cockerel around and you either don't have neighbours or they are very understanding then why not?

But remember he will be crowing at crack of dawn and could also become very aggressive in protection of his ladies. Sadly, that first roo of mine still went in a pie because he got so viscious in his defence of his girls that I ended up with permanent scarring. I could not risk the damage he might do to me, or worse, to the children, so he went back where he came from and they culled him. His son, however, turned out to be the polar opposite.....daftly docile.....so he lives with us still.
