Rooster

Why are your chicks allowed in the same area as the rooster? I would think these chicks should be separated from the rest of the mature flock until they are more grown and can defend themselves or get out of the way easily.

Welcome to BYC!

Iwiw X2....chicks need to grow up a lot before they are allowed to be anywhere any adult birds, especially roosters. You can mix them in with a rooster when they are of laying age. Keep these chicks separated but in sight of the rooster however, so as they grow, the mixing day will go easier.

Welcome to our flock!

He always pecks and chases them around

What do I do about my rooster attacking my chicks

Hello and welcome!

I'm wondering how old your chicks are? When I think of chicks, I see little fuzz balls just starting to grow and when I see rooster, I'm thinking of a big roo, kinda like King Kong and Ann! If that's not the case and their all the same age, then he could be in the juvienile stage and is trying to mate with all that move.

A little more information would help - as Basskids pointed out, knowing the age of the chicks in this situation is key. Also - are the chicks hatchery birds that have been brooder raised or chicks that were hatched and being raised in the flock setting with a broody?

Well he's not full grown rooster yet I should've clarified that sorry but he's like a month and a week old

So you have a 5 week old cockerel and 1 1/2 week old chicks, is that correct? Where are these birds housed that they are together to provide the opportunity for the older/larger bird to accost the smaller/younger birds?

I usually put them in that whenever I have to put the older ones in along with the cockerel I put the board in between so they each have their own space and won't fight but in the afternoon I put the older ones in a little area for them during the day
