Rooster

I've seen that happen too and from what I've read, often the rooster directs the hens as to which nesting box to use. Not sure if that's the case but I saw it somewhere on BYC.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

This is something that some roosters do. They pick a nest for the hens and then either sit with them or stand outside and wait for them. They are being a real gentleman!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3, some roos like to scope out nesting boxes for the girls.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Roosters can do some pretty interesting things sometimes. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Some good roosters do this to encourage the hens to lay in the nest box. There are even a few roosters that will sit on eggs briefly while a broody hen takes a lunch break.
