Roosters and children

Unfortunately, it only takes once for a rooster to inflict permanent damage on a child, and such an attack can come out of the blue. I hope for your child's sake that you will always get a warning sign first....

100% agreed. Would you trust a bull or a stallion around a toddler? Of course not. Same thing, smaller, but more agile, package. The ONLY way a child gets near my roosters is if I literally pick up the rooster and hold him for petting. The risk is not worth it at all. Takes once, just once, to blind a child.

I agree Speckled Hen, we were lucky that the rooster only got my son on the white of the eye and not the iris or retina. Unfortunately, we were told we were buying 4 pullets and as we are new to chicken keeping was somewhat naive. I assumed the breeder would know what she was talking about.
The roosters are gone and have been replaced with 2 lovely little goldline pullets, same age and size as the 2 I already had. They have fit right in with my 2. (I'll admit I didnt quarantine them). I'm not planning on getting anymore so hopefully this will be the last of my chicken buying endeavours.
I don't know alot about roosters (or chickens for that matter) but I probably wouldn't have another especially while my children are so young.

Older kids can be taught how to deal with roosters and they aren't as much at risk as smaller children. So, maybe when your kids are older, you can try to find a better tempered one. I have had wonderful roosters and after the bar is set so high, I'd never settle for anything less.
