Roosters and children

Thanks Green Eggs, I'm in the UK so don't think the buy sell trade bit will be good for me. I had someone come and pick up the 2 cockerels today so they'll be happy free ranging somewhere and my kids are safe. Now trying to find 2 hens to replace them. Harder than it sounds where I live

This is very true, and there are many others about children being seriously injured by roosters. Why take the chance?

So glad you got rid of the roos. Within the past month, I've read stories on BYC of families who had a child attacked by a rooster - a previously gentle non-aggressive rooster. In one case, the parent was right there and still had a hard time pulling the roo off the child. They spent the night in the ER with some terrible injuries to their child. In my opinion, having a rooster isn't worth the risk if you have young children. A couple months ago, I was attacked by a roo - one that I had raised from a day-old chick and one that had never shown any aggressiveness whatsoever previously. He flew at me - I kicked him away - he was relentless. Each time I'd kick/push him away, he'd regroup and charge right back. He was on Craigslist within the hour - and was rehomed the next day - with full disclosure as to why I was getting rid of him. If it had been one of my grandchildren in there, he could have really injured them.

The fact is that a small child is a completely different situation than an older child or adult. A rooster is very bothered by the way they move and sound and many consider them a threat, so best to never allow a small child around a rooster. I won't even allow them around Isaac or big old blue Teddy Bear-like Suede in my avatar because of the way they make them jumpy and on edge.

I disagree with the people saying do not have roo's around children or toddlers. I have two very respectful roosters and a 2 and a half year old. I also had a nasty roo that ended up as bbq. If they show aggression to people get rid of them ASAP. Plenty of nice roo's.
I have had several roosters and if they are mean they go, if they are mean to each other they go, us they go. Simple as that.
My son loves to feed and collect eggs with me and the roo's have never shown aggression to us. If they ever do...... bbq!

Unfortunately, it only takes once for a rooster to inflict permanent damage on a child, and such an attack can come out of the blue. I hope for your child's sake that you will always get a warning sign first....
