Roosters as buddies - no hens

In my experience---YES!

I have hauled all of my roos from st run orders and packing peanuts down to my IL's house. Everything from silkies to RIR to sultans there now, all roos and they all get along great. My IL's like the crowing for some reason and enjoy the bug control in the spring/summer.

i originally had four boys, apart from the occasional standoff they got along fine. i still had two boys when i got my girls and they still seemed fine and both equally went with the girls, but they were young my remaining roo (now a daddy,

not that he knows it) is only five months, dont know if that makes a difference.

I have two free range roos, and they are best buds. They follow us around like dogs--we don't actually pet them, but they stand right next to us, and have to be wherever we are! They like to stay on our porch when we are inside (wish they were potty trained!!), but have never shown aggression twords each other or us.

We recently raised a bunch of straight run together, reducing the males as they proved over aggressive or flawed in some other way. As they matured, each of the remaining 5 roosters had their own harem, and on pasture they had plenty of space to keep each to its own group.

Into more confined winter quarters they went, and the trouble began. The poor hens were getting bullied by all the over-attention, as the boys no longer stayed with just their own hens.

So I now have a hen pen and a rooster pen. They all stand by the fence looking at each other. I feel like I have separated Romeo and Juliet (but hey, Juliet really needed a break).

So far the roosters squabble a bit, but seem to have figured out there are no girls to fight over any more. I would not say they are great buddies, but they all roost quietly together and for the most part leave each other alone.

Everyone will be happier when they are out on pasture again.

I know a breeder that swears by his "bachelor pad." He keeps all his boys together - far away from the hens. Only pulls them out when they are needed. He told me as long as they cannot see or hear the hens, they have nothing to fight over.
