Second post this week...my chickens are going to be the death of me!!! My rooster's comb has been turning black and it is starting to fall off. It is like 90 degrees here so it cannot be frostbite! That is exactly was it looks like though. He is about 23 weeks old and this started about two months ago. He rules the roost so I don't think the girls are pecking him. Any ideas what it could be? He seems healthy otherwise.

It does look to be pecked at or got "damaged" rubbing against something, maybe when he eat out of the feeders/waterer? If it was pox it would be round, caused by mosquitos. If these pictures are recent, the bottom one looks like healthy tissue under the "scab". You could put some antibiotic or just leave it alone which I know is difficult to do. These are my thoughts but others will be peeping in....

Those pics are from this morning. I guess he could be rubbing it against the hardware cloth. The food and water are both in the open and are just plastic containers. Tonight I put some iodine on cotton balls and tried to clean it. Then I put some petroleum jelly on it. I will be home tomorrow and will be watching them carefully to make sure the girls don't peck him since I did that. Thank you for your input!

X2 I agree with @ChickNanny13 It looks like pecking or injury/damage.
