My roo suffered the same on his comb tips while I was out of state over Xmas. He now sports bagbalm, but this won't help the already damaged tips. They are now black and the posterior couple have self-dubbed. And his comb isn't nearly the size of a leghorn. Ah well, live and learn; good thing the roo doesn't seem to have noticed anything except the bag balm applications.
I never saw them sitting on the eggs. I had 6 nest-boxes for 12 (then 7 hens) and most of the eggs ended up in 3 of them).
