Rooster's comb tips changed colour today?

My roo suffered the same on his comb tips while I was out of state over Xmas. He now sports bagbalm, but this won't help the already damaged tips. They are now black and the posterior couple have self-dubbed. And his comb isn't nearly the size of a leghorn. Ah well, live and learn; good thing the roo doesn't seem to have noticed anything except the bag balm applications.

Blue Comb is really scary because the comb turning blue is the only symptom. If he's still alive next week, he doesn't have it. Then it's just frostbite.

frostbite damage can cause fertility in eggs to go WAY down,, on hens they may even stop laying for a while.

Looks like the link didn't work. Too bad; I'll figure it out one day.

Speaking of FERTILITY. I tried incubating some eggs a few months ago in a home-made incubator. Not one hatched.

The guy at the co-op recently told me that Randy was likely too young.....I wanted to replace the hens that the fox ate;(

Guess I'll try again in the spring. Hopefully next time the hens will do all of the work; they didn't last month. I think they just laid their eggs and got right back to free-ranging I never saw them sitting on the eggs. I had 6 nest-boxes for 12 (then 7 hens) and most of the eggs ended up in 3 of them).

Some breeds of hens will not go broody at all in thier lifetime. Other breeds will go broody before they even start laying.
