Rooster's foot chewed up, sticky and bloody looking

My light brahma used to break her foot feathers all the time. I ended up putting bag balm on her feet. When she's peck her feet, she'd get a beak full of bag balm and she quickly learned that he horrid taste was from her feathers. Now she doesn't peck her feet, and her feet are really soft. :3

Wow. Glad I reread the thread and just found your entry. I will definitely try the bag balm. I would imagine it's him breaking off his own bloodfeathers. I can't imagine the girls doing it. He would not put up with that. Or...maybe it's like nervous biting of fingernails....because I have been re-establishing my authority with him. His rooster ego is at a disequilibrium.

You're welcome! :D maybe he needs chicken counseling...LOL

Right. I did check for "caine" (vasoconstricts and can cause fast heart rates) It has something called "Pramoxine" for the pain. So should be OK but I'm going to get some plain stuff today...just in case. Thanks for your input.

Well, I am establishing my authority by picking him up off the roost early in the morning, ticking him under my arm and then going for a 15 minute walk with him. The article (in BYC) says to do this for 3 weeks. He is definitely softening toward me. But I have to make sure he doesn't do the "drop wing dance" and simply knows who is boss. This process has removed my fear of him. He seems nicer already and we're only at day 4.
