I'm about to place an order for my new flock of laying hens. This time I want to also get a few roosters to butcher, but my family is STRONGLY opposed to crowing at 3 am. Is there any breed of bird that doesn't start crowing too terribly long before it's big enough to eat?

Brahmas & Jersey Giants are pretty laid back!

If you coop has no windows or light coming in he won't crow till you open the doors!
they crow when something happens like the sun coming up (it is getting lighter)

Cornish rocks here too. Ours are around 8-9lbs in 8-10 wks. We get some every year.

I'd also agree on just getting some meaties, but if you don't want to do that, and you're just looking for some to butcher, just get a couple of extra hens.
