I am new a new chicken mom and have noticed that my roosters sit on the eggs. Is this normal? They appear to care more about them than the hens.

I have seen some people on here mention roosters sitting on nests as sort of a teaching (or luring!) behavior for young hens, but I completely don't remember the thread title this was discussed under.

In general, I'd guess that is a pretty unusual behavior. Are they sitting there for a long time? Are you wanting the eggs to hatch, or are you planning to eat them?

LOL, Maybe he just wants more company!

I really don't know. I have heard of other fowel doing this. I havent heard of a chicken doing it though. Do the hens relieve him? does he get up and let the hens set again? Helping out? Training? Maybe just confused? sorry I just don't know! If he moves and lets the hens take over again, I'd say he's a keeper.

I had a pair of Banty D'Uccles that when she went broody they would both sit on the nest. They were in a six by 12 foot run living in a medium airline type dog crate that was wrapped in a tarp, and the run was tarped on three sides and the top on one end. Food and water was in that end.

When the chicks hatched, they still both sat on them, and both of them made protecting sounds and motions. When they were about two weeks old the hen was killed by a predator...and the rooster continued to act like the hen. They were foster eggs and one turned out to be a full size rooster chick. He fell asleep with his head under his step father until he was bigger then the D'Uccle rooster was.
