I had my roosters processed yesterday, they were 16 week old Rhode Island Reds.
When it was time for them to go into the plucker it started tearing the skin of along with the feathers.
Anyone know why it would do that?
The guy that proccesed them was nice and finished them by hand.
I just wonder if anyone else has had this happen?

If the scald water is too hot or they are scalded too long then the skin will tear. It also sometimes just happens with no rhyme or reason. I usually attribute it to human error, though, and nothing to do with a chicken's skin being too soft. The reason he was "nice" about it was because it was his oops.

yup I scalded a few of mine a tad too long last weekend and the skin tore off too- I did it for about 20 seconds longer than normal
