My rooster spurs are getting very long and I was wondering how to cut or trim them down. I am afraid he will spur the grandchildren and then its the soup pot for him.

I heard of removing spurs by using a hott potato in this book but I never heard of anyone actually doing it

I cut my rooster's spurs with pruners. I know... sounds weird but those things are thick and the pruners seem to do the trick! You don't need to cut them really short, and make sure you don't cut down so far that he starts to bleed. Think of it as a big chicken toenail.

You can pull the spur off like a shell...
its pretty cool.
(it leaves a smaller less dull one)
When it is off it looks like the spur shell is a hollow horn.

I saw a guy use a pair of pliers and twist them off. you have to be careful though. if you do it right the chickens dont seem to mind too much.
