roosters

These are pictures of my hens.. is this just because I don't have the hen to rooster ratio right and over breeding

we have 5 roosters in our flock with 14 other chickens, and we are building a rooster coop, but what should we do before it's finished? they only fight a little, but when they do they draw blood.
I would build faster or get rid of some roosters.

I think I will get more chickens
That's great - if you have the time, space, money and other resources to feed and care for them.

Hard to tell without knowing anything else about your flock. Like how many chickens you have, their ages, and how much space they have.

all my roosters hatched this spring, so today I ordered 30 chicks to come in November. ( that was the only time I could get them till spring)

Fighting chickens is illegal in the USA

. You need to thin it down about 2-3 roosters. I have several roosters and over 100 chickens. They will naturally get their pecking order together, but if they are fighting til blood draw, it's time to sell, butcher, or make separate pens.
It is only illegal if your forcing it.Roosters will have squabbles, absoultly nothing wrong with it.As long as there are no serious injuries,do not worry Gemma12.

That hen does look overmated.

I'm not so worried about the roosters beating up on each other a little. But hens getting overmated is a different story. Even adding more chicks isn't going to solve that problem, until spring when the new girls are old enough to be mated. Plus, if you have space for 30 more chickens, you'd have space for housing the excess roosters, right? I think you need to get motivated about building another pen. Stick the roosters in dog crates or something for a day or so while you build, it won't hurt them at all and will give your hens a rest.

@ Jaredvheck

Give a bit more information, as to roosters to hens, and total space in coop/run and age of your birds. This can be caused by a couple of things:
  • Too small of space in coop and run
  • too many roosters per hens
  • or feathers start to look rather horrible this time of year, as your birds are headed into molt. Those could just be old ratty feathers that are shortly going to be shed and replaced by new feathers.
