Roosters

I have a (I think) Red Starr almost two-year-old rooster. I have seen him protect his girls before and he seems pretty good at it. What I'm curious about is what roosters are good protectors. I also am going to post pics of him and I would like to know for sure what breed he is.

It depends on the roo. Most will protect their hens from other animals. Like I said, it depends on the roo so you roo might chase away dogs or cats and even humans. I'm not so sure about raccoons or other animals at night (birds calm down with the sun and rise with the sunrise).

Rhode Island reds are great at protecting their flocks and terrible bullies to them. The two leghorn cross roos I've had have been marvelous, and the australorp was terrible. He bullied and pecked and was eventually cooked. Silkies don't protect anything.

Like dogs, it depends on the individual temperament as much as the breed, but I like this guy. He's a quarter-silkie and kind of stupid about what goes where, especially for his age, but he peeps for his hens when he finds food and he doesn't bully the pullets, and he chases out the interloping ducks when they try to eat the feed. His half-brother out of an easter egger (the grey boy) is an a--.

Awesome rooster so pretty.

I had a great Amerucana he protected his girls but was submissive to me. I gave him away because I had the choice between the cute little oegb in my profile picture or a rooster I never really liked even though he was sweet too his girls he always gave me the stink eye.
