So I got 4 new chickens yesterday, there all 14-16 weeks old and the breeder said i was safer getting a rooster next year as if I put a mature rooster in with them he would probably kill them . We're going to get more chickens in a few weeks and I was just wondering should i get an unmature rooster about 16 weeks old?

Welcome to BYC!

No, you shouldn't mix a fully grown rooster with 14 week old chicks as he can hurt them. So you can either wait until they are grown and then get a grown rooster, or get a rooster that is their age now. You do not need a rooster if you just want eggs. Only if you want fertile eggs do you need a rooster. And some roosters go bad. So if you do get a rooster, make sure he is friendly first.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, you'd don't want to add a mature rooster to a flock of young pullets, and you don't need a rooster unless you want fertile eggs. At 14-16 weeks if you get more chickens, even if they are the same age in a few weeks you will have to add them to the flock gradually. There is a nice article in the Learning Center on adding chickens to your flock. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/adding-to-your-flock
