Roosting bar help!

Another question....if I make a free standing roost bar, or a ladder one, can I use two of the bars I have put together to make it a 2" one? Would I need to cover it with anything?

Would probably be better to use a solid piece of the 'right' size...and easier if you're not handy.

You could just add onto the top of the smaller roosts.
How long are they?
An how many birds(too lazy to look back)

I want to say they are about 40" long. I will have 4 chickens/max of 6.

Two 40" roost should be fine for 4 birds.
I'd not put more than that in there anyway.
Screw a 1x4 on top of the existing roost bars...is what I would do.

Something like this, drywall screws countersunk.
Pack the screw heads with beeswax when done so they don't clog with poop.

Also, just something to consider, you can build down from the rafters. Add wood to the rafters so you will have something to screw to then build a hanging roost out of the size wood you want.

Just knock the sharp edges off with sandpaper. I use a sander but it doesn't take much. My concern is not to make it more comfortable for the chicken, some places I've seen them roost or perch can be interesting in that regard. My concern is to remove potential splinters. That should round them enough to handle the comfort thing. I do all four edges. top and bottom. It only takes a few seconds.

Nice response Aart. :thumbsup
