Roosting bar question

We use tree limbs about 4-5 inches in diameter, seems to work fine, have not had the first complaint.

I use old pine poles that were just de barked and de branched about 2.5 to 3 in dia. work great but haven had them over the winter yet will see how chickens feet do still might change to 2x4 if needed good luck

See my BYC page for pics of my setup------I use a ladder roost pivoted to lift up out of the way when I need to. The roost bars are made of 2X4s that I ripped lengthwise, and then rounded the upper edge. If you look close, you will see the original top roost bar has been removed----it was too close to the wall (about 8") and resulted in multi-colored wall streaks. So now the upper most roosting bar is at least 18" away from the wall. The ladder roost is suspended by chain and has a cable & pulley routed over to beside the people door with a counter weight so I can pull the roost up and out of the way easy.

P.S. Love my sub-ground level dirt floored pit for deep litter composting---cleans out only once a year in spring for garden fertilizer.
