Roosting bar question

We use tree limbs about 4-5 inches in diameter, seems to work fine, have not had the first complaint.

I use old pine poles that were just de barked and de branched about 2.5 to 3 in dia. work great but haven had them over the winter yet will see how chickens feet do still might change to 2x4 if needed good luck:D

See my BYC page for pics of my setup------I use a ladder roost pivoted to lift up out of the way when I need to. The roost bars are made of 2X4s that I ripped lengthwise, and then rounded the upper edge. If you look close, you will see the original top roost bar has been removed----it was too close to the wall (about 8") and resulted in multi-colored wall streaks. So now the upper most roosting bar is at least 18" away from the wall. The ladder roost is suspended by chain and has a cable & pulley routed over to beside the people door with a counter weight so I can pull the roost up and out of the way easy.

P.S. Love my sub-ground level dirt floored pit for deep litter composting---cleans out only once a year in spring for garden fertilizer.

I'm using 2 adjustable shower curtain rods in my small, portable, "night" coop.
