The poll needs an option for both at once. The coop here started out with rods but some of the chickens had a hard time with them so pieces of flat boards were added.So I've got board squatters and rod grippers. I did kind of fix the rod problem I wrapped them to make them fatter I suppose it makes them warmer in the winter too.
 
I use a 2x4 with flat side up so they can squat down and have their feet up against their belly to keep their feet warm.
 
I have 2x4 wide side up for roosts, over poop boards with 2x2 edging to hold in sand.
They perch on 2x4, 2x2, and right on the sand.
 
I personally make my own hand hewn roost poles. A simple 2x4 ripped in length and then rough hewn into a sorta dowel without the perfection and smoothness that is probably nothing like nature would provide. A gnarly textured quasi round length. Perfect! The dimention varies from 1 to 1 1/2 inch diameter. No need to be fussy. Chickens are not.
