roosting poles

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
There is no one right way.
There is a study posted in one of these threads that found chickens prefer to wrap there feet around their perch. Many here will tell you that having the perch flat keeps their feet covered and warm in the winter. I was one of them! But I just ripped my 2x4 roosts in half and rounded the edges and they do seem to prefer them that way after having been on the wide side of a 2x4 for over a year.

Hello and welcome to BYC:frow.
We use 2x4's and even a 2x6 for our roosts and our ladies seem to really like it. They can jokey for position on roost without knocking birds off.
In the winter they can sit on roost and completely cover their feet with their feathers when it gets really cold. We dont use heat in the coop and havent had any issues with frostbite during winter.

Hello and welcome to BYC. I hope that you enjoy your time here. At one point I used both roosting options and noticed no particular preference (though whether that would have been the case in cold climates I cannot say).

This is a useful link to take a look at - “How to...” guides. You may wish to consider including your location (using the guide in the link above). You can use this link to contact members in your area - U.S. States

Best wishes
