Its a bit hard to tell but it may be that the roost isnt wide enough, mine have a rounded one and have no problem but its alot fatter than what yours looks

Yeah the bar, i think it needs to be fatter to give them something easier to stand on especially the larger birds

Yeah, I'm going to cut and nail some 2x4s over the bars for them.

Reading what you wrote, yes, the bars are too small for adult hens and roosters. I did not know they don't like to curl their toes around what they are sitting on, I thought all birds curled their toes. I have read that they like to sit on their feet to keep them warm and wondered how they did that with their toes curled over the edge of the board. I will nail some 2x4s over the dowels.
