I am turning an old pig barn into a coop. It is 9 foot by 12 foot, with two 4 foot by 8 foot pig stalls, both in excellent condition, plywood walls and floor. I would like to turn one stall into a coop for now, should be large enough for my six chicks, if I get more I can add the second stall. From what I have read I will need two roosts (10 inches per chicken) and want a poop board underneath, with room under the board for feeder and waterer. The height is 5 foot 6 inches at the edges with a peeked roof. My question is dimensions. How high should the roost and poop board be? How should the roosts be set up,side by side or one above the other? How large should the poop board be? I plan on using PDZ it the poop board.

where and how high are your nesting boxes going to be? Are the chickens going to be in there all the time, or will there be 'outside' time available during the day?

Some pics would be nice

If your side walls are 5 1/2 feet tall, is that where the roost is going to be? put the roost about a foot higher than the nest boxes. If you run one roost down one wall, about 15 to 18 inches away from the wall, and then make sure your poop tray extends out past that 6" or so minimum, you'll be fine. As good as it is to have 'general rule of thumb' numbers, once they're up on the roost and settled in for the night, odds are they'll all be squeezed tightly together. Maybe not so tightly in summer time. but one 8' roost will be more than sufficient. 2 to 3 feet off the floor, give them something to hop up on as a step or build a ramp to help them get up there
