Roosts - what NOT to do

I just went and measured my roost and dropping board. The dropping board is at 2' and the roost at 3', so they can use the edge of the dropping board as a "ladder". Maybe when they get older I will add one. I don't think there is any real advantage to putting the roosts up higher, as long as they are higher than the nest box. ANd you MUST have a dropping board, it will keep everything sooo much more poop free! If you are worried about room, run 2 roosts side by side along with 10' wall, with a wider dropping board. Ridgerunner has good measurements.

That's brilliant. Room saver!! I am showing my builder (hubby) that pic.

I'm considering dropping boards but can't figure out an easy way to get a poopy board in and out of the coop.

Sometimes (like really rainy days) I scrape the dropping boards while I'm in the coop. Droppings get scraped off with putty knife and scooped into an old coffee can (I LOVE old coffee cans!!) then on to the compost pile. Dropping boards make keeping it nice soooo much easier!

Yea Slo . . . I had to make it funny to lighten up my feeling of horror . . . * laugh *

I ended up mounting 2x4s flat side up, about 4' high. There's 2 rows so there's enough butt space for all the girls however it's hard to count butts and beaks before tucking them in for the night. It's working better than the obstacle course though!
