Thank you, I just went and mounted a flat one now they have both so we will see which one THEY like best.

I try to reason ideas out when many opinions.

I use 2x4, wide side up as do many.

Why, well simple.

1) As mentioned, in cold weather, birds will sit and cover their feet. Seems easier if on a flat surface.

2) I notice my flock jockeying for their preferred spot on the roost. With a 4 inch platform they easily "walk" the plank... while settling down.

Personally I use the free option... I had a tree fall in my yard last year and I cut some limbs different sizes and made a roosting maze. Before I built my roosts, my girls would huddle in a corner of the coop and sometimes pile on-top of one another. I lost a bird this way due to suffocation. Roosting is essential.
