I am building a new coop that is a walk-in type with a dirt floor. How high up should I put my roosting bars (which will be 2x4's where the ladies can place their feet on the wide side).

TIA! :hugs

Good luck with your coop build! Hope you'll share pictures.

@aart

I have my roost 15 inches away from the wall and about 3 feet off the ground, is that too high?
When people ask how high is too high for roost I say....
....it can depend on how big the coop is.
They need room to jump/fly down without crashing into something.
My roost board is 24" deep and about 36" high, my coop is 6' wide,
that leaves a 48" landing area(where the water and nests are not in the way)
and have had some crashes.
You can see I added a ramp for those that prefer not to jump/fly down.
I had some big clumsy birds when I started, still do.
Some birds use the ramp, some do not.

Thank you for your response!

My coop is 8 ft x 6.5 ft. The roost is on an 8 ft side and is 15 inches away from the wall with nothing in front of it.... Maybe I will just add a ramp.... or move it to a 6.5 ft wall.
