I have made a coop the area inside is about 5ft by 4ft deep and 3 foot over its lowest side and 5 foot to it highest the roost is about 3 and a half to four foot off the floor do I need a ladder for the to reach the roost

OK, but really, you say your highest roof height is 5', and your roost is at 3.5-4' high. You may want to drop that roost a bit. If it is at 4', you are not giving them a lot of head room there. And 3.5-4' is a good hop for a chicken. They could probably make it, but I would lower the roost down to 30" or so. They could hop up there with no problem. Otherwise, you may need a step or something to help them.

We put in 2 roost intending them to use the lower roost as a step. Our raised hen house is a little more then 4ft tall. The mistake I made was putting the top roost too close to the ventilation. It's sure cute to see them looking out the wire at the top of the coop but I worried when is was cold this winter (OK our lowest was about 30F and that wasn't often)
