My girls roost on anything. I have 1x2s in my coop though, and they prefer the one's that are small side up at night time.

Mine love their roost. They are on it all the time it seems. It is made from 2x4 with the large side up. It is easy for them to climb and walk on. You can see it if you go to My Flock below in my signature.

I have 2X2s and 2X4 flat side up. My chickens won't used the 2X4s. At present, they prefer the 2X2s.... guess we'll wait to see if they used the 2X4s in the winter.

We always used round poles for perches. I am afraid the one by two's will cause foot problems. The chicken's foot is naturally made to curl around the perch.

People on this website tend to prefef two by fours on the idea that makes the hen sit on her feet and keeps them from freezing.

I never considered that because it never freezes here.
