Okay, an inquiry from an idiot who has only been to one chicken show in his life: How do you tell the difference between the two?

I have what appear to be several rose combed RIR, but after looking at a picture of Buckeyes...Well, I'm not so sure. I definitely want to keep the RIR, in fact, I really want to engage in a successful breeding program for them, because they are absolutely gorgeous with slightly flighty but good temperments. As soon as I can determine who the best layers are, I have my two roos selected to pair up with the hens. It would be nice to know what I actually have, however.

Where did you get them at?
I don't know a hatchery one that carries Rose Comb R.I. Reds.
Rose Comb R.I. Reds tend to be harder to find than Buckeyes.
If you could post a picture of them that ould help..

Chris,

thanks for replying to this thread also. I won't have time to post pics until the weekend. I had bought them from someone who purchased them at a poultry show in Tenn( I'm in VA). No idea where they came from, but they were priced at a steal and I really liked the look of them. I processed the other roosters, so I have only two males to display the combs and a few females who have combs so small they are hardly noticeable.

On the comb,
Is there three separate rows or is it more flat with lost of rounded points?
This picture might help..

If the females have combs so small they are hardly noticable they are probably Buckeyes. [not that there's anything wrong with that Laura

Chris,

They are more like the cushion comb in the diagram than the rose. There is definitely not a dorsal spike. Additionally, it is not like a pea comb, as there are not three defined rows with the protrusions in the center. However, the combs do cover more of the head than in the diagram, passing well over the eye and approaching the back of the skull, there is a smooth termination back into the skin rather than lifting off.
